3 Days in Istanbul: A Practical First-Time Visitor Itinerary

Spend three days in Istanbul exploring Sultanahmet, the Bosphorus, Galata, Karaköy and Kadıköy without overpacking the schedule.

Three days is enough for an excellent introduction to Istanbul if you group sights by neighbourhood. The city sits across two continents, and crossing it repeatedly wastes valuable sightseeing time. This itinerary keeps each day geographically focused and leaves space for the unexpected.

Day 1 — Sultanahmet and the historic peninsula

Start with the area around Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Explore Sultanahmet Square and, depending on your interests and current entry arrangements, plan time for Topkapı Palace or Basilica Cistern.

The Grand Bazaar or Spice Bazaar can make a lively afternoon visit, but opening arrangements vary and some markets may be closed on certain days. Check official opening times and ticket information before travelling. End the day with a relaxed dinner rather than rushing to a distant neighbourhood.

Day 2 — Galata, Karaköy and the Bosphorus

Spend the morning around Galata and its surrounding streets, then walk downhill towards Karaköy and the waterfront. The city is wonderfully varied here, with cafés, architecture and sea views within a compact area.

For an afternoon or evening Bosphorus experience, compare public ferries, sightseeing cruises and dinner cruises. They are different products, so check duration, route, meals and departure pier. Leave enough travel time to get to the correct boarding point.

Day 3 — Kadıköy or a deeper European-side day

If you want to explore the Asian side, take a ferry to Kadıköy and enjoy its markets, cafés and neighbourhood streets. It offers a different atmosphere from the monuments of the old city.

If you prefer museums and palaces, use this day for a more focused European-side visit rather than trying to cross the whole city. Your best choice depends on where you are staying and the day’s weather.

Where should you stay?

Sultanahmet suits travellers prioritising historic landmarks. Taksim and Beyoğlu make nightlife, restaurants and transport connections convenient. Karaköy can work well for the waterfront and Galata. Kadıköy appeals to those who want a neighbourhood base on the Asian side.

Wherever you stay, check the distance from your actual address to rail or ferry connections. Istanbul hills are easy to underestimate on a map.

Airport arrival and departure planning

Before your first sightseeing day, arrange a realistic trip from your arrival airport to the accommodation. Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) are different airports; this matters when estimating travel time.

On departure day, leave a generous buffer for traffic, airline check-in and security. A relaxed transfer helps protect the final day of your trip.
